One week down…

Two months ago, I announced that I had been accepted into the Master’s of Divinity (M.Div) program at Wesley Seminary at Indiana Wesleyan University. Although most of this program will be online, after much preparation, this past week, my seminary officially journey began with a trip to Marion, Indiana.

Blessed are the peacemakers

The headlines are grim. Four police-involved shootings in less than a week. Two where police were victims, two where they may have been perpetrators. And our nation seems to be on the brink of a meltdown. What is the Church to do? Some in the Church seem content to stoke the flames. With bold rhetoric, […]

Back to School

Ever since I embraced God’s call to enter into the ministry, I have wanted to attend seminary (i.e., graduate school for pastors). When I went off to Bible college, my intent was to finish college and proceed straight through seminary before entering the ministry, but the simple fact of the matter is that college is expensive! […]

Tulips

Years before my wife and I moved to Des Moines to pastor our church, someone planted tulips around the windows on the south side of the building. Of course, anyone who knows much about tulips will know that that they have a tendency to multiply until there are too many of them for a given […]

Finished (Good Friday 2015)

Note: Today, for the first time since we started holding the service nearly 10 years ago, I had to cancel the Good Friday service at our church. Even so, I wanted to share an abbreviated version of the message I had prepared for the service. So here goes…

Oholiab who?

It’s been several weeks since I started my study of Oholiab, and I’m a bit frustrated. I knew going into this that Oholiab was obscure, and I realized that there isn’t a whole lot in the Bible about the guy. But I’ve been surprised by just how difficult it is to answer even the most basic […]

What’s In a Name?

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post about Oholiab, who first appears in the Bible in Exodus 31. I have been fascinated by this guy for several years. But it wasn’t until just recently that I finally decided that I must do a study on this guy. You see, one of the ongoing […]

Untitled Ramblings

Have you ever felt like Hezekiah? You know, the twelfth king of Judah. In 2 Kings 18, we read that, from the moment Hezekiah came to power, he was different. He did the right thing in God’s eyes (vs 3); tore down the pagan idols that had sprung up across the land during his predecessors’ […]

With Him Oholiab

Several years ago, I stumbled across Exodus 31. I forget why I was even reading it, but something about it captivated me. The general plans for the tabernacle had already been delivered by God, through Moses, starting with an offering to fund the thing in Exodus 25. Exodus 31, then, begins the account of how the […]

An Open Letter to Mark Driscoll

Dear Pastor Driscoll, I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s going on in your church or home, let alone your head right now. I don’t know the pain that you’re experiencing or all the details of the path that brought us to this point. I don’t even know what all the “scandal” talk is all about. […]
